Description: Renowned Japanese knifemaker Kiku Matsuda has been grinding blades for over 40 years and is a 5th generation knife grinder. His unique, dramatic grinds are well known throughout the knife industry. His father runs a small workshop in Seki, grinding blades for production knife makers. Kiku joined his father's business at the tender age of 15 and learned the grinding technique from his father. Kiku's skill at the grinder has become legendary. Whether you know it or not, you may already have a knife blade ground by him. He grinds knives for the likes of William Henry, Pro-tech, and Randall Kings. In fact, he personally grinds and polishes William Henry's custom grade blades.
Raijin is handmade by him and shows his skill at its best. This piece is as impressive as its name suggests. Raijin is a god of lightning, thunder and storms in Japanese mythology. Deceptively nimble for its size, Raijin combines the versatility of a machete with the cutting efficiency reminiscent of a kukri in one tool. With an 11-3/4 inch blade, it is a massive knife! The OU-31 tool steel (Kiku's favorite steel) blade will have exceptional edge holding. OU-31 is a Japanese PM (powdered metallurgical) steel with micro fine crystalline structure that embodies many of the best attributes needed for knives. The steel is hardened to 64 Hrc (very hard!) and has more than 3 times the toughness of D2. The blade features Kiku's high performance Hamaguri (convex) grind at the front and a flat grind toward the handle -- combining a very strong edge with a precision cutting edge. The blade features a non-reflective disruptive acid finish. Retaining camo paracord and thumb notches ensure a secure grip. A nicely rounded and contoured Micarta grip completes this refined 18 inch brute. Whether blazing trails through dense jungle, opening a felled log to get at the dry inner core, or just making some kindling, Raijin is capable and tough enough for any situation.
Accompanied by hand fitted Kydex sheath with Tek-Lok belt clip. Exceptional work throughout!
